5 Simple Ways to Prepare Your Puppy for Their First Groom

Your puppy's first grooming appointment doesn't begin when they arrive at the salon, it begins at home.

By spending just a few minutes each day introducing your puppy to gentle handling and new experiences, you can help make their first grooming appointment a calm and positive one.

Here are five simple things you can start practising today.

1. Handle Their Paws Every Day

Many dogs dislike having their feet touched simply because they've never learned that it's okay.

Spend a few seconds each day gently touching your puppy's paws, toes and nails while rewarding them with treats and praise. This helps prepare them for future nail trims and foot handling during grooming.

2. Introduce a Brush Slowly

Don't wait until your puppy's coat becomes tangled before introducing a brush.

Let them sniff the brush, reward their curiosity, then gently brush for just a few seconds before finishing on a positive note.

Short, enjoyable sessions are far more valuable than one long session.

3. Get Them Comfortable Being Touched

During grooming, your puppy will be handled in many different ways.

Practise gently touching:

✔ Ears

✔ Face

✔ Tail

✔ Legs

✔ Belly

Reward calm behaviour and keep each session relaxed and enjoyable.

4. Make New Sounds Fun

Hair dryers, clippers and other grooming equipment can sound strange to a young puppy.

You don't need to use grooming tools at home, but introducing everyday household sounds while rewarding calm behaviour can help your puppy build confidence around new experiences.

5. Keep Every Experience Positive

Your puppy doesn't need to be perfect.

The goal is simply to help them learn that handling and grooming are safe experiences.

Keep sessions short, reward often and always finish while your puppy is still relaxed and happy.

Small positive experiences repeated over time build confident adult dogs.

Remember...

Confidence isn't built in a single grooming appointment.

It's built through hundreds of positive experiences throughout puppyhood.

By investing a few minutes each day now, you're helping your puppy develop the skills they need for a lifetime of comfortable grooming and veterinary care.
